The Castle Combe Autumn Classic
Saturday 01st October 2016
At last years event our race Healey, FSL 246 had been stored and out of use for probably over 7 years. Jack Rawles having completed two years in the Ginetta Junior Championship (2013/2014) was itching to get out on a race track again. With Jack’s motivation and enthusiasm and Bills mechanical skills the pair of them set on the car to re-commission it and get it back on track.
Jack had never raced a Healey before or ever raced at Castle Combe so had no preconceived ideas or expectations. He surprised himself when he planted the car in pole position and then came 2nd to David Grace in the race. A result none of us ever expected.
This year Jack will hopefully be entering the The Castle Combe Autumn Classic again in the Healey Driver International Healey Challenge. An endurance race for home grown and international drivers racing Austin Healey cars produced between 1952 and 1968.
The 100/6 and 3000 six cylinder cars and four cylinder 100M cars race for a series of coveted trophies that commemorate important figures in the history of Healey racing, such as John Gott, Syd Segal and Dave Hardy.
The Castle Combe Autumn Classic has become a date to mark on your calendar. In 2012 a simple idea for a classic themed meeting was borne. Year on year the event has grown and last year’s event was hailed by many as the circuit’s ‘best ever’ meeting. The car park was certainly full to capacity.
The whole circuit steps back in time, with numerous club stands, displays and period style aplenty. There are eight races, comprising ancient vintage sports cars to sixties single-seaters.
Make it a day not to miss!
