Genuine UK RHD car personally exported from London (where it was purchased by the first owner, Mr A Harel) to Mauritius (via Tanzania) where it spent about 15 years (registered as A 562). Mr Harel owned the car until 1958 and then it had 4 subsequent owners who were Navy officers serving at HMS Mauritius. The last owner (Chris Moses) brought her back onboard the Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship Hebe and owned it until his death in 2014. The current owner purchased the car in 2017 from us at BRCC.
The current owner has been in contact with the first owner’s son (Antoine Harel, who works for the family company still based in Port Louis) whose mother remembers the car & provided a photo of it when new. Contact with the last owner’s widow provided info that she could remember (paper copies provided).
The car is very solid and has all its original panels. It appears to have been repainted in about 1970/71 (according to invoices), its original colour being Healey blue. A fantastic history includes every invoice/receipt/MOT dating back to 1970, as well as the original Mauritius and UK logbooks and the car still wears it’s AA Tanganyika (now Tanzania) badge.
Many improvements have been carried out in current ownership to make this a reliable, safe and entertaining car to drive. This is not an exhaustive list by any means, but they include:
- Uprated springs & dampers, plus front anti-roll bar & rear Panhard rod
- Uprated brakes (½” thick racing discs & Girling calipers, Alfin aluminium drums)
- 72 spoke wheels and Dunlop L15 tyres
- High ratio steering box & new drop arm
- Heavy duty stub axles
- Competition flywheel & clutch, plus upgraded rose-jointed clutch linkage
- 1 ¾” SUs plus cold air box
- 2” exhaust manifold/system
- High torque starter motor
- Pertronix electronic ignition
- Aluminium unleaded cylinder head
- Aluminium ribbed sump
- Rebuilt gearbox with Sebring ratios, plus competition 22% overdrive (Hardy Engineering)
- 5:1 CWP plus plate type LSD
- High deflection prop shaft
- Lightweight battery (mounted in boot)
- Competition fuel pump and Malpassi filter/regulator (mounted in boot)
- All lighting converted to LED (inc. headlamps)
Note – everything removed (or replaced) from the car has been carefully retained so that should a subsequent owner want to revert it back to original, they can very easily. All parts were generally supplied by Denis Welch Motorsport and AH Spares.
The car is eligible for events such as Goodwood Revival, Mille Miglia, FISCAR Series, Le Mans Legends, VSCC 1950s Sports Racing cars and the HSCC Griffiths Haig Trophy (FIA HTP not required).
